AllMusic Usability Research

Client

AllMusic is an online music guide service website. Founded in 1991, its headquarters are located in San Francisco, California, and Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Role

User researcher

Challenge

Perform audience segmentation by dividing the users of AllMusic into categories based on their interaction with media and demographics, and give AllMusic recommendations on how to attract their targeted segment.

Our goal in this project is to provide valuable feedback and recommendations to assist them in transforming the website so that it satisfies the target users’ needs better. In order to do this, we need to find answers to the following two questions:·

  • How to expand the target audience beyond the current user demography?
  • How to transform the website to a labyrinth site in an incremental way?

Still working on the project, I will update this page with all the documentations and reports that we're allowed to share.

  •  To understand AllMusic’s competitive landscape and how users interacted with online services and information resources, we conducted interviews with individuals with a target population of young females.
  • We analyzed  the interviews to come up with findings regarding their day to day lives as well as their motives and methods when searching or discovering new things concerning music.
  • Designed surveys and we decided to use the following questions to guide us in our design:
    • How do users search for a new music?
    • How do they explore music they already know?
    • How do users like music recommendations, in general and on AllMusic

website? To what extent do they use it?

    • How do users like “mood” function, in general and on AllMusic website?

    • To what extent do they use it?

  • Performed comparative evaluation guided by responses from user surveys that we conducted in the last phase, in addition to previous comparative analysis work conducted by AllMusic

  • We are now in the process of performing heuristic evaluation where each member will be Nielsen's heuristics to the system and we will consolidate our findings as a group.

  • Usability Tests

  • To be continued...
